Corfu

Corfu is an island located just off the West coast of Greece. Corfu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holiday makers. Unlike other Greek islands Corfu is green with vegetation; hot and dry summers along with winter rain creates lush vegetation which is dominated by over 2 million olive trees.

The Old town of Corfu is a labyrinth of narrow streets known as kantoúnia paved with cobblestones, sometimes tortuous but colourful and clean. A promenade rises by the seashore towards the bay of Garitsa together with an esplanade between the town and the citadel known as Spianada with the “Liston” arcade the west side of which is full of cafes and bistros.

Palaio Frourio is an old Venetian fortress built on an artificial islet with fortifications surrounding its entire perimeter. The interiors have been restored for use in special events like concerts and sound and light productions. The central high point of the citadel has a military observation post at the top with a giant cross at its apex. At its foot lies the St. George’s church, in a classical style punctuated by six Doric columns.

Neo Frourio is a complex fortification at the north eastern part of the city. Now open to the public one can see the maze of medieval corridors and fortifications.

Ano Plateia and Kato Plateia are two parts of the biggest square in South-Eastern Europe and one of the largest in Europe. This is full of green spaces and interesting structures and has an ornate music pavilion where the local “Philharmonikes” have classical concerts.

Kavos the southern resort of Corfu has a long strip which runs parallel to the coast line with many bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, hotels and apartments popular with the tourists.

Car rental companies on the island of Corfu include Corfu Car Rental, Corfu cars for hire, Sunrise Car Rental, and Nova cars.
